Cole was feeling pleased with himself. He had successfully helped James on his mission and then had hot sex with him afterwards. He would have thought a mere mortal would never have anything to contribute, but James had praised his creative way of thinking. And when they got back to his place, he had worshiped his body. The way James looked at him and touched him made him feel like a million dollars, and he loved it.

James still behaved in that curious way—telling him what to do, teasing him—but he loved that as well. Being teased and controlled like that gave him the best orgasms he had ever had in his life.

The only problem was his nagging fear that James was just keeping him around for the sex and the magic. He had explained that he ‘recharged’ some of his power when he spent time with Cole, so he wasn’t entirely sure if he wanted to go on dates with him or if he just wanted to get sex and a bit more power. Cole didn’t like the idea that he’d finally found a great guy to date, only to find he was pursuing him for sex.

It would all be fine if he was the type to enjoy casual dating, but he wanted a serious relationship. He didn’t want to keep seeing James if he was just being used. But how could he know for sure? James seemed genuine enough, but he still didn’t know him well. On top of that, he was a demon who took the form of a human. He would have to remember that.

His phone chirped—it was a text from one of his new friends from the gallery, Elaine. Cole had gotten to know some of the other artists at the gallery recently. Again, he had been expecting them to be snobbish, but they were actually encouraging. Many of the artists shared his concerns and joys about the creative life and were able to empathize with him. They invited him to happy hours and parties and while the old Cole might have turned them down, the new one said yes.

He texted back and double checked with Elaine to see if he could bring James. Now he would have to ask James if he was free, which he turned out to be. That made him feel a little better, at least.

James arrived when he said he would and Cole hopped in the cab. “You look great,” said James, putting his arm around him.

Cole felt himself flush and hoped James wouldn’t see it in the dim light of the cab. He still wasn't used to someone actively flirting with him like this. “Thank you,” he said. “Do you recognize the shirt?”

“Of course. It's the one that you were wearing when I first saw you,” he said, picking up Cole’s hand and rubbing it with his thumb.

Inwardly, Cole was extremely flattered that he remembered.

“So who’s this friend?” James asked.

“Oh, it's one of the other artists. She's new to the gallery as well, so we bonded over being emerging artists, as they call us.
